Atonement

Hey all,

I'd been willing to watch Atonement for long and I finally got the chance last week..
and I LOVED it!!

*spoilers ahead*

It's about a rich girl, Cecelia, who fell in love with Robbie, the housekeeper's son.. and right after they declared their love to each other, her little sister, Briony, accused him of a crime he didn't commit, and he got arrested.
Cecelia and Robbie both lived in misery for the remaining couple of years of their lives, apart from each other, till they passed away before they got a chance to "resume" their perfect life and be together again.
Briony, since the incident, had chickened out and didn't tell anyone the truth, she just expressed her feeling of guilt to her sister in a letter, and that was all!! And about sixty years after Cecelia's and Robbie's death, she came up with a biography about all of them, with an ALTERED happy ending, "the life they'd always dreamt of".. and to her, that was her atonement.

"Older Briony: So, my sister and Robbie were never able to have the time together they both so longed for... and deserved. Which ever since I've... ever since I've always felt I prevented. But what sense of hope or satisfaction could a reader derive from an ending like that? So in the book, I wanted to give Robbie and Cecilia what they lost out on in life. I'd like to think this isn't weakness or... evasion... but a final act of kindness. I gave them their happiness. "

(Seriously, at this point, I really wanted to shoot her!)

The movie broke my heart. It was saddening and depressing, seeing how a girl could ruin the lives of two in love so simply without even trying to correct her mistake, how they were longing to get back to each other, and how they died before having a second chance.

Keira Knightley's and James McAvoy's performance was perfect (as always), and the little girl who played Briony, despite the fact that I hated her in the movie, but she's very brilliant, and I bet she's going to be something.
Not to mention that the movie was directed by the same one who directed Pride and Prejudice (which is enough for me - Pride and Prejudice is one of my all-time favorite movies!)

"Robbie: The story can resume. I will return. Find you, love you, marry you and live without shame. "

Now if you excuse me, I have a final exam to study for.
Wish me luck. 3 more to go!
